Packaging is either one-way or reusable.

Reusable packaging is packaging that has been designed to accomplish a minimum number of trips or rotations within its life cycle by being reused for (in principle) the same purpose for which it was conceived.

  • A mustard jar subsequently used as a drinking glass is not reusable packaging. The second use is completely different from the original use.
  • An ordinary cardboard box that the packer empties and then uses to pack his own products does not become reusable packaging as a result of this second use. The box was not designed to accomplish a minimum number of trips or rotations.

Any packaging that is not reusable is one-way packaging, which is subject to the take-back (i.e. recycling and recovery) obligation.
